What Tongits Beginner Basics Covers

Tongits is played with a standard 52-card deck among three players. Each player starts with twelve cards; the dealer gets thirteen. Your goal is to form sets — three or four cards of the same rank — and runs, which are three or more cards in sequence within the same suit. On each turn you draw one card from the centre pile

or pick up the discard, then drop one card face-up. The round ends when a player goes Tongits by emptying their hand, when the draw pile runs out, or when someone calls a Fight. Understanding which combinations lower your deadwood count fastest is where beginner strategy actually begins.

What is deadwood in Tongits?

Deadwood refers to the unmatched cards left in your hand that have not been formed into a valid set or run. Lower deadwood count is better when a Fight is called.

What does it mean to call a Fight in Tongits?

A Fight is a declaration any active player can make after the first player draws. All remaining players reveal hands; lowest deadwood count wins the round.

What is a Dump in Tongits?

A Dump means adding one or more cards from your hand onto a set or run already laid down by another player, reducing your own deadwood count in the process.

What is a set in Tongits?

A set is three or four cards sharing the same rank — for example, three Queens or four Sixes — laid face-up on the table to reduce your hand count.

What is a run in Tongits?

A run is a sequence of three or more cards in the same suit arranged in consecutive rank order, such as Five, Six and Seven of Spades, laid as a meld.

What does going Tongits mean?

Going Tongits means emptying your entire hand by forming all cards into valid sets and runs. It is an immediate win and earns the highest payout for that round.
